Welcome to our team style cookery class in Bristol!
This small-scale class for 12 participants is not socially distanced.
This cookery class will be taught by the wonderful Sudanese chef Negla at the Coexist Community Kitchen in Bristol.
This is a team style cookery class where we will collectively prepare 4 dishes in 2 teams. The Chef will divide the class into 2 groups with each one responsible for creating the dishes. You are also free to move around during the class to learn about the other dishes.The Chef will recap each of the dishes throughout the evening and at the end of the class so that everyone can learn about all of the dishes. You will also be emailed the recipes after the class.
A sample menu of the dishes that will be taught include:
- Sudanese Dama (Chicken Curry)
- Sudanese Chilli Sauce
- Sudanese Graa (Sudanese Squash Curry)
- Molah Nemyah (Okra dip)
- Gurasa (Sudanese Pancakes)
- Hibiscus Drink
This menu caters to both vegans and those who eat meat. Allergens include: alliums, nuts, dairy, gluten. Please let us know if you have any specific dietary requirements!
We will also be selling our beautiful Migrateful aprons! You can purchase them when booking your ticket (pick it up at the event) or before the cookery class starts at the venue. Please note we only accept card payments.
A message from our Chef Negla:
“Hello I am Negla from Sudan. My grandmother taught me to cook (my mother died when I was 15 years old) when I got married age 19 – she explained to me it’s very important to be able to cook for your husband. But even then I didn’t take much interest in cooking becuase my auntie and sisters always did the cooking at home. Then 10 years ago me and my family were forced to leave Sudan becuase of the war and we arrived to the UK as refugees. We didn’t have my sisters around anymore so I had to start cooking for my family. It was the first time I had properly cooked for my husband. I have 3 daughters and one son. They liked my cooking a lot. I started to try lots of different dishes and then I realised I was an amazing cook.”
Sudanese cuisine consists of a generous share of stews and gravies—often eaten by hand—fresh and cooked salads, dips, lime, peanut, rice dishes, sweet and savoury pastries, unique breads, and decadent desserts. In line with other Muslim-majority countries, lamb and chicken are the preferred meats.
