Learn the secrets of Eritrean cooking in Helen’s online cookery class!

We are so excited for Helen’s new online class! She is a wonderful teacher and story-teller. She will share the secrets to traditional Eritrean dishes. This is your chance to learn a brand new cuisine, support an amazing cause, and eat great food!

The class will be conducted as an interactive virtual cook-along. The classes usually range from 1-2 hours long. The chef will lead the group step by step through the recipes; stopping frequently to answer questions, share anecdotes, and provide feedback on your dishes!

Before the class we will send you a list of ingredients, quantities and equipment so you can join ready to learn! We will also send you a reminder email 3 days before the class takes place that will include the Zoom link, titled “Your upcoming online Migrateful Class”. You can also find the Zoom link on the Online Event Page, accessible through the link included in the Eventbrite reminder email.

Helen’s cook-along dish will be Timtimo, Hamli, and Salad

Equipment List

  • 2 cooking pots
  • 2 wooden spoons
  • 1 bowl
  • 1 chopping board
  • 1 sharp knife

Ingredients List

  • 125ml brown lentils
  • 2 onions
  • 1⁄2 tin chopped tomatoes
  • 2 tsp garlic and ginger paste
  • 2 green chilli
  • 2 medium potatoes
  • 1 carrot
  • 1 handful parsley
  • 250g greens (e.g. kale, spinach, cabbage, chard, spring greens etc)
  • 1⁄2 lettuce head
  • 1 tomato
  • 1⁄4 cucumber
  • 2 spring onions
  • 1⁄2 lemon

Spices:

  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1⁄2 tsp dried rosemary
  • 1⁄2 tsp thyme
  • 1⁄2 tsp dried mixed herbs
  • 1 1⁄2 tsp vegetable stock powder
  • 100ml sunflower or vegetable oil
  • 50ml of olive oil
  • Injera (or Mexican tortillas or flatbreads)
  • Salt

I have 6 brothers and 2 sisters. My brothers never cooked, only me and my sisters. I have been in the UK for 1 year and 5 months. I got my refugee status last year, age 28. “
