[6:00 pm BST] Join Tilly in preparing a wonderful Sri Lankan meal for her new online cookery class!

Join Tilly in preparing two wonderful Sri Lankan dishes for her online cookery class! This is your chance to learn a brand new cuisine, support an amazing cause, and eat great food.

The class will be conducted as an interactive virtual cook-along. All participants will be sent an Eventbrite confirmation email with a list of ingredients and quantities needed for the recipe, the equipment needed for the class, and a Zoom meeting link. If you do not receive the confirmation email please check your spam folder. If you are still missing information about the class please email The classes usually range from 1.5-2 hours long. The chef will then lead the group through the recipe; stopping frequently to answer questions, share anecdotes, and provide feedback on your dishes!

We are running virtual cookery classes during the COVID-19 pandemic, while we are unable to run our regular in-person events, as a way to keep connected and to support our chefs.

Tilly will teach the group how to prepare Elawalu bath (Egg and vegetable rice) and Parippu (Sri Lankan dhal)

Ingredients for Elawalu bath

  • Turmeric powder
  • Onion
  • Tomato
  • Carrot
  • White cabbage
  • Leek
  • Garlic
  • Coriander
  • Olive oil
  • Curry leaves
  • Cinnamon stick
  • Curry powder, preferably mild madras
  • Egg
  • Salt & pepper

Ingredients for Parippu

  • Dried red lentils
  • Turmeric powder
  • Curry powder, preferably mild madras
  • Curry leaves
  • Garlic cloves
  • Red onion
  • Green cardamom pods
  • Coconut cream, or coconut milk
  • Mustard seeds
  • Star anise
  • Crushed chilli, or chilli powder
  • Olive oil, or any oil
  • Coriander leaves to garnish
  • Salt

Message from Tilly: “Hi I am Tilly from the South of Sri Lanka. I arrived in the UK on my own in my teens and I didn’t know how to cook. I was starving many days as I didn’t know how to cook and I missed my mother’s food. One time she rang me and asked me what I was eating in England so I told her I was very hungry and not eating properly. So my mother said “take the phone to the kitchen and follow my cooking instructions”. That’s how I learnt to cook – over the phone! I miss mainly three things about my mother country; my family, the food and the weather. Sri Lanken food is delicious and I’m very excited to have the opportunity to teach others how to cook it!”
