I am from Panjshir in Afghanistan and grew up in a big family in the country’s capital city\, Kabul. \nI would spend my time walking and exploring the historical places in the city and became interested in art and architecture. I started drawing when I was very young and my work depicts traditional life in Afghanistan. \nI always see art in food. When I am cooking\, I don’t just consider the taste. Food has to look good and I spend time designing its presentation. \nI realised that I had a talent for cooking when I was a teenager when friends invited me to their homes – not as a guest\, but to cook for them! \nI am very proud of Afghan food. My dad also loved to cook\, so I had two very good teachers. I improved my cooking skills through observing and working with chefs in my restaurant business. Now I’m in the UK\, I’m starting a new chapter and bringing with me the flavours of Oman. I hope to open my own restaurant business in London one day. It is in the middle of the Silk Roads\, which means it has been a crossroads for trade and remains a melting pot of different cultures. The food culture is very colourful\, taking ingredients and flavours from many cuisines. My family is Tajik and so the food I have grown up with and will teach in my classes is based around this culture \nI learned to cook from a very young age from my mother and grandmother. The village where I grew up had cows\, sheep\, fruits and vegetables and all of my favourite recipes are based on fresh ingredients. I have nine siblings. My mother was our hero feeding her large family every day. \nCooking for my family also brings me great joy and I would love to share my recipes with you. I grew up in Spanish Town\, the capital of the Parish of St Catherine. We lived very centrally as my mum worked in the market in town\, selling fish and fresh vegetables. I would often help my mum at the market and I learnt to cook through watching her. \nSometimes when she was working\, I would look after my younger siblings and would cook for them. \nMy passion for cooking only grew and I often cooked for my neighbours and for parties and celebrations for my friends and family. I love seeing satisfaction and joy on people’s faces when I cook for them. My favourite dish is ackee and salt fish – so much so that when I moved to Antigua I brought an ackee tree to plant in my garden and this is something that I always cook for my two children. \nI’ve been in Bristol for a year now and it’s a very friendly and supportive city. I’m volunteering with local refugee charities Bristol Hospitality Network and Borderlands. When I got my refugee status last year I held a big picnic in the park for my friends to celebrate. Jamaican food is spicy and full of flavour\, using lots of fresh vegetables and herbs. \nCooking and eating Jamaican food helps me reconnect to home\, music is also very important to me and I love dancing while I cook – no matter what is going on in life\, it makes me feel happy. A lot of our ingredients come from other parts of the world. \nI developed a passion for cooking\, watching and helping my grandmother from the age of 8 years old. She was a great cook and baker. On Sundays\, she would gather all of us\, her granddaughters\, to eat together. Rice and peas are one of our special Sunday meals. Our home was always full of people. Even though we were poor\, my grandmother was always feeding everyone. There were always people coming over to our house for my grandmother’s food. I remember the day she let me cook was one of the best days of my life. It really boosted my confidence\, like I can do anything! Before leaving Jamaica\, I used to cook from home and sell the food for a living. My food was very popular and I really enjoyed doing it. \nWhen I moved to the UK\, I worked in a Caribbean restaurant for many years. My coleslaw was famous at the restaurant! In Gaza\, I was a university lecturer in psychology for 20 years and a director of a charity supporting mothers and children. I have 5 children: 2 daughters who still live in Gaza\, a son and daughter in Canada and a son in London. \nAs a young woman\, I lived in Libya. I married there\, brought up my children and achieved my degree and my Masters. Libya’s sky seemed open to my dreams and I was very happy there. \nWhen I first arrived in the UK\, I had nothing here and felt lonely and ashamed. My passion for cooking began at age 10\, helping my mum clean okra and learning to haggle in the fish markets with my dad. My father was a teacher and provided for our family and his four sisters. My mother was the oldest daughter in her family\, so everyone would eat at our home. She was very generous and always cooked extra for those in need. \nSadly\, because of the civil war in Sri Lanka\, my family had to move to Bahrain. There I worked in the welfare department of an Islamic NGO\, but I was also able to use my cooking skills and I cooked for events for the Youth Group. My wife is also a very good cook and our dream is to open a restaurant. My family is Tajik and so the food I have grown up with and will teach in my classes is based around this culture \nI learned to cook from a very young age from my mother and grandmother. The village where I grew up had cows\, sheep\, fruits and vegetables and all of my favourite recipes are based on fresh ingredients. I have nine siblings. My mother was our hero feeding her large family every day. \nCooking for my family also brings me great joy and I would love to share my recipes with you. I moved here from Jeddah\, Saudi Arabia in 2013. I have lived the majority of my life there. Culturally I am Uyghur\, an ethnic Muslim minority located in Central Asia (now part of China called Xinjiang). The dishes I teach in my class are a mix of the two cultures I come from. I learned to cook from my Mum. She used to call my sisters and me to assist her with cooking. I was her main helper\, especially when it came to pulling noodles. \n \nWhen I was in high school and had our summer holiday\, my mum trusted me enough to cook for the family and I insisted she write me the recipes with every little detail. I got paid for it! My mum taught me to cook several cuisines from around the world but my favourites were Saudi & Uyghur. I come from Congo\, DRC. I was born in the capital called Kinshasa. I studied communications at university. Meals are hands-on\, social\, and meant to be shared\, with signature dishes like Shiro\, Zegny\, and Salata Bazinjan served communally on one plate\, highlighting the warmth\, creativity\, and togetherness of Eritrean food culture. \n \nABOUT THE CHEF  \nA message from our Chef Wedad: \n“Hi\, my name is Wedad and I come from a town called Keran in south-west Eritrea. Eritrea is a beautiful country in East Africa and is surrounded by mountains and the Red Sea. I grew up with my grandmother\, who loved to cook and taught me all her recipes. My friends and I liked to cook our dishes for each other and so I also learnt how to cook other cuisines. My favourite dish is Salata Banzinjan\, an aubergine salad\, which I make in lots of different ways. Eritrean food is typically spicy and is served on one plate to be shared with the whole family. One of the things that we eat often is a fermented bread called injera\, which we have at lunchtime. Today\, we will be serving injera with Shiro and Salata Banzinjan. I came to the UK in 2012 and the biggest barrier I faced was the language. Now I study English at the Red Cross and one day we were writing about our favourite food. A few weeks later\, I brought in the dish that I wrote about – kebab – and my teacher and colleagues liked it so much\, she suggested I apply to join Migrateful! I’m volunteering with local refugee charities Bristol Hospitality Network and Borderlands. When I got my refugee status last year I held a big picnic in the park for my friends to celebrate. Jamaican food is spicy and full of flavour\, using lots of fresh vegetables and herbs. \nCooking and eating Jamaican food helps me reconnect to home\, music is also very important to me and I love dancing while I cook – no matter what is going on in life\, it makes me feel happy. I was a physical education teacher in Lebanon and I had been a professional swimmer and surfer in Brazil. \nI have five children and I can speak five languages – Portuguese\, Arabic\, English and Spanish and even a little bit of French. \nI am a passionate cook. I especially love confectionery. I actually have a degree in pastry and confectionery. I like the creativity\, the design\, the art and the skill involved. \nI joined Migrateful hoping I can improve my cooking and presentation skills. DESCRIPTION:In this session  Iryna will teach delicious\, authentic authentic Ukrainian dishes followed by a sit-down family-style  meal.\n\n\nNothing beats a home-cooked meal shared with family! And this is what inspires our Family Style Cookery Classes\, a fun\, laid-back homestyle cooking experience. Here\, you will learn to prepare different dishes and then enjoy them with people who\, like you\, fuel our mission of supporting refugee and migrant chefs on their journey to integration. It’s a cookery class with a conscience\, like they say! \nYour class will be led by our wonderful Chef Iryna from Ukraine at the Migrateful Cookery School in Clerkenwell\, London. \nAt our Family Style Cookery Classes\, you will be grouped with other participants and prepare dishes together as a team. Think of Chef Iryna as the head of the family! She will take care of dividing the class into groups\, and each group will be responsible for creating one of the dishes. Of course\, you are welcome and encouraged to move around during the class to learn about the other dishes being prepared. Throughout the evening\, Chef Iryna will share stories about their food and culture\, and explain how to prepare each of the dishes so you come away with some new cooking tricks and inspiration from Ukraine. I am Ukrainian.I was born in a small town in Ukraine\, but I have lived most of my life in Kyiv – our capital city in the centre of Ukraine\, where we built our home.I came to the UK in February 2022 – soon after the war started. \nI am staying here with my daughter and her young children\, and I have started a different life here.I had a long and varied career as a computer and software engineer\, and worked worldwide for over 30 years\, as a consultant for large international companies. \nI was privileged to travel to and work in many different places in many different countries. I really enjoyed it all – especially tasting all the cuisines as I travelled! DESCRIPTION:Chef Hani will teach you some of his favourite Omani dishes followed by a sit down meal.\n\n\nABOUT THE CUISINE \nOmani cuisine blends Asian influences with aromatic spices and herbs from the Middle East that bring warmth to every dish – like Hani’s Makbous\, a popular and traditional rice dish that is known for its deep\, aromatic taste and considered a symbol of Omani hospitality. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE CHEF \nMy name is Hani\, and I come from the Sultanate of Oman — a beautiful country in the Middle East with a rich history\, deep-rooted traditions\, and a vibrant culinary culture. \nMy mum taught me to cook – she is Egyptian and I really love Egyptian food. My dad was from Oman\, and I think this has helped me create my own type of cuisine – a mix of Egyptian and Omani food. \nMy dad also loved to cook\, so I had two very good teachers. I improved my cooking skills through observing and working with chefs in my restaurant business. Now I’m in the UK\, I’m starting a new chapter and bringing with me the flavours of Oman. I hope to open my own restaurant business in London one day. I was a teacher in Algeria but wasn’t able to continue teaching when I moved to the UK in 2015. After I met my wonderful husband\, we quickly had children and I began to spend more time at home. During this time\, I realised my passion for cooking and baking. I cooked so much for my friends and family that they told me to stop as they feared they were getting fat. In the future\, I want to open my own bakery where I can share Algerian food and culture with people in London. Algeria is extremely multicultural and culturally rich\, which is something I am very proud of.
