I learned Persian cooking techniques from my mother\, but also particularly from my grandfather. He was a chef who loved to cook with the food he had grown. He had a large field of crocuses – which are the source of saffron\, a very important ingredient in Iranian cooking.  \nCooking was always a passion of mine\, alongside my main profession; I trained and worked as a lawyer in Iran. I also worked as a head chef in Iran. For me\, cooking is not only about making food\, it’s about sharing happiness\, my culture and my memories\, and bringing people together.  Through a friend in my English class\, I was very lucky to hear about Migrateful – it is giving me the chance to share my culture and the amazing Persian food from my childhood. DESCRIPTION:Chef Saada will teach delicious\, authentic Somali dishes followed by a sit-down meal.\n\n\nABOUT THE CUISINE \nSomalia\, located on the coast of the Indian Ocean\, is considered the gateway between the Horn of Africa and the Middle East. It’s key position in the spice trade route is reflected in the fragrant and aromatic spices central to Somali cooking. The cuisine is a blend of African\, Middle Eastern\, Italian and Indian influences. Expect fragrant rices\, fresh herbs\, and a balance of sweet and savory in every bite. From Hanid (lamb stew with tamarind gravy) to Bajiyo (falafel) and Bariis Iskukaris (rainbow rice). I grew up in Somalia\, East Africa\, with my mum and dad and three siblings – I’m the second oldest. I learned to cook with my Mum. She had her own recipes and her own way of cooking. I stayed at her side while she cooked – she needed my help and I was so interested. I would stand with her for six hours at a time. I stayed at school until I was 9 years old and then I stopped. But I wanted to carry on learning so I kept reading and teaching myself.  \nGradually I started cooking more\, by the age of 12 I was cooking for the family.   \n \nI came to the UK in 2004\, first to Weston Super Mare then to Bristol. I met and married my husband that same year and had my first baby in 2005. Now I have four children! As well as cooking for my family\, I cook at lunch clubs and organise celebrations and events for older people\, for women\, in schools and for young people. Always bringing people together through food. \n \nI like teaching – seeing people concentrate. When you cook\, you use different muscles and hold yourself differently\, it brings out the best in people. The way I make samosas is second nature to me. SUMMARY:Algerian Cookery Class with Amel | LONDON | Cookery School
DESCRIPTION:In this session Amel will teach delicious\, authentic Algerian dishes followed by a sit-down\, family-style meal.\n\n\nABOUT THE CUISINE \nAlgerian cuisine is a beautiful blend of North African\, Mediterranean\, and French influences — rich in spices\, seasonal vegetables\, slow-cooked stews\, and warm breads. From fragrant soups like Chorba Frik to comforting tagines and delicate pastries\, Algerian food is deeply social\, made to be shared\, and full of heritage. With flavours shaped by centuries of cultural exchange\, every dish tells a story of community\, generosity\, and home. \n \nABOUT THE CHEF \nA message from our Chef Amel: \nHi my name is Amel\, I am from Sidi Bel Abbes in Western Algeria. Our city is nicknamed ‘Petit Paris’ because there is a strong French influence. I wasn’t allowed to cook growing up because my parents wanted me to focus on my studies. I was a teacher in Algeria but wasn’t able to continue teaching when I moved to the UK in 2015. After I met my wonderful husband\, we quickly had children and I began to spend more time at home. During this time\, I realised my passion for cooking and baking. I cooked so much for my friends and family that they told me to stop as they feared they were getting fat. In the future\, I want to open my own bakery where I can share Algerian food and culture with people in London. Algeria is extremely multicultural and culturally rich\, which is something I am very proud of. I have always been a daydreamer and I really value the freedom to pursue my dreams here in the UK”. \n \n\n\n\nON THE MENU (subject to change): \n\nTagine Zitoun (Olive Tagine with Chicken and Meatballs) | Meat (Chicken and Lamb); Egg\, Gluten (Wheat)\nChorba Frik (Vegetable Soup with Freekah and Carraway) | Vegetarian; Celery\, Gluten (Wheat)\nBourek (Tuna Pastry Parcels with Cheese) | Fish (Tuna); Eggs\, Fish\, Gluten (Wheat)\, Milk\nRekhsas (Algerian Semolina and Nigella Seed Flatbread) | Vegetarian; Celery\, Milk\nSamsa b-louz (Fried Almond\, Sesame and Honey Pastries) | Vegetarian; Gluten (Wheat)\, Milk\, Sesame\, Tree Nuts (Almonds)\n\nThis menu contains meat (chicken and lamb) and fish (tuna). SUMMARY:Pakistani Cookery Class with Amtul | Veg Friendly | Bristol
DESCRIPTION:Chef Amtul will teach delicious\, authentic Pakistani dishes followed by a sit-down meal.\n\n\nABOUT THE CUISINE \n \nWith deep roots in regional traditions and home cooking passed down through generations\, Pakistani cuisine is known for its bold spices\, fresh herbs\, and slow-cooked stews. It combines rice\, breads\, and vegetables into comforting\, shared meals full of flavour and heart. From curries and lentils to fritters and salads\, it sits within South Asian cooking while keeping its own distinct identity. \n \nABOUT THE CHEF \nA message from Chef Amtul: \n““I come from Pakistan\, it is a beautiful country. I grew up in Rabwah\, on the lush green banks of the Chenab River in Punjab. The town was established for the Ahmadiyya community. \nI remember my childhood there very fondly\, they were the happiest days of my life and still bring me peace when I think about them. From the age of 10\, I helped my mother cook\, and by 12 I was cooking properly on my own. Okra masala and aubergine curry were among the first dishes I learned to make. My father always praised my cooking and gave me confidence\, while my mother would gently suggest ways to improve. \nAfter I married\, I moved to Bahawalpur with my husband\, who is a doctor\, and together we raised our four children. But because Ahmadis face persecution in Pakistan\, it became unsafe for us to stay there. We first moved to Senegal\, where my husband helped establish the Humanity First hospital\, and later to The Gambia so our children could study in English. In 2023\, we moved to the UK. \nPakistani culture is deeply rooted in hospitality and care for others\, it is very important to make guests feel welcomed and cared for. During my time in Senegal and Gambia\, I was always hosting people visiting the hospital from different countries. I always made sure they had delicious food to eat and extras to take with them. Cooking for people has always brought me joy. I only know how to cook in large quantities! My food is spicy\, balanced\, fresh\, comforting\, and full of flavour. I am excited to share my recipes with Migrateful and hope you enjoy them!” \n \n\n\n\n \nON THE MENU (subject to change) \n \n\nPalak Paneer (Traditional Cheese in Spinach Curry) | Vegetarian; Milk\nChicken Mughlai (Rich Chicken Curry) | Meat (Chicken); Milk\, Tree Nuts (Pistachio\, Almond\, Cashew)\nParatha Roti (Flaky Flatbread) | Vegetarian; Milk\, Gluten (Wheat)\nRaita and Green Chutney (Yoghurt Side Dishes) | Vegetarian; Milk\nBaingan Sabzi (Aubergine Curry) | Vegetarian; Milk\nPakora (Deep-Fried Vegetable Fritter) | Vegan; None\n\n \nThis menu contains meat (chicken) but is vegetarian-friendly\, with 5 of 6 dishes meat-free. SUMMARY:Ethiopian Cookery Class with Tarik | Vegetarian | LONDON | Pop Up
DESCRIPTION:Chef Tarik will teach delicious\, authentic Ethiopian dishes followed by a sit-down meal.\n\n\nABOUT THE CUISINE \n \nEthiopian cuisine is one of the oldest and most distinctive culinary traditions in the world. At its heart is injera\, a soft\, fermented flatbread that serves as both the plate and the utensil\, bringing people together to share a meal from a single platter. Recipes vary across Ethiopia’s regions and communities\, but food is always closely tied to hospitality\, family\, and celebration. Built around pulses\, vegetables\, warming spice blends\, and slow-cooked dishes\, Ethiopian cooking is as much about sharing and connection as it is about flavour.  \n \nABOUT THE CHEF \n“My name is Tarik and I am from Ethiopia – a country in East Africa\, which has a long history and is home to many. We are proud to have 83 different languages. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church combines elements of the Old and New Testament; this old history combined with Ethiopia’s natural beauty of volcanos\, mountains and lakes now attracts many tourists to Ethiopia.  \n \nMy grandmother inspired me to cook and taught me a lot about cooking – she said I was a quick learner! She loved people and every day\, she would make traditional Ethiopian coffee and invite all of our neighbours and friends to our home. She loves to cook for special occasions\, especially at New Year. My grandmother also taught me the importance of kindness and being helpful and I think of her when I am cooking.  \n \nWhen I arrived in the UK\, I continued my love of cookery and volunteered in community\, church and Red Cross kitchens\, in Liverpool and in Preston. I was referred to Migrateful by the Luminary Bakery and I love it so much! I look forward to teaching you about Ethiopian culture and about our food and drinks – I can’t wait to see you in my class!” \n \n\n\n\nON THE MENU (subject to change): \n \n\nDinich Wot (Spicy Potato and Egg Stew) | Vegetarian; Eggs\, Milk   \nTikil Gomen (Ethiopian Sauteed Cabbage with Carrot and Potato) | Vegan; None\nGomen (Slow-Cooked Ethiopian Greens) | Vegan; None\nShiro Wot (Roasted Ground Chickpea Stew) | Vegetarian; Milk\nKey Sir (Ethiopian Braised Beetroot) | Vegan; None   \nMista Salad (Green Lentil Salad) | Vegan; Mustard\nAyib (Ethiopian Cottage Cheese) | Vegetarian; Milk   \nDabo (Orange-Perfumed Bread)| Vegetarian; Gluten (Wheat)\, Milk\n\n                                                                                                                \nThis menu is vegetarian. SUMMARY:Indian Cookery Class with Jiwan | Veg Friendly| LONDON | Pop Up
DESCRIPTION:Chef Jiwan will teach you some of his favourite Indian dishes followed by a sit down meal.\n\n\nABOUT THE CUISINE \nIndian cuisine is extremely diverse\, shaped by centuries of regional traditions\, religion and trade. From the spice-rich curries of the north to the coconut-infused dishes of the south\, India’s food reflects a deep connection to heritage\, family\, and fresh ingredients. Jiwan’s dishes highlight the warmth and colour of Indian home cooking\, showcasing balanced spices\, comforting recipes\, and the joyful spirit of sharing food with others. \n \nABOUT THE CHEF \n“I am Jiwan\, which means life. I have lived most of my life in Punjab\, India. It is a farmland state in the north of India and the name comes from five rivers which flowed through the region at one time.  \n \nMy journey is a bit unusual as it started from need\, rather than passion. I grew up in a big family and I learned by watching and trying. When my family was away\, I made my first dish\, similar to tacos\, which was well liked by my family after their return.  \n \nI believe cooking is a very important skill\, not a talent. Everyone can develop it\, given some time and effort! Finding a reason helps a lot and mine is making others happy and smile with my food. There are so many dishes from across India that make me happy – that is why my class focuses on a wider area of India than Punjab. \n \nThe time I have spent with Migrateful has been wonderful and fun. I have learnt so much about food and the world during my training! I hope this class teaches you something new which you can take home and spread that happiness.” \n \n\n\n\n \nON THE MENU (subject to change): \n \n\nDosa (Savoury Indian Crepe) | Vegetarian; Gluten (Wheat)\, Milk\nSamber (Braised Lentil and Drumstick Stew) | Vegetarian; Gluten (Wheat)\, Mustard\, Peanuts                                                                                                     \nGoan Fish Curry | Fish (Cod); Fish\nAmritsari Chole (Chickpea Curry) | Vegetarian; Milk\, Mustard  \nEgg Curry | Vegetarian; Eggs                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       \nTikki Chat (Potato Patties with Chutneys and Yoghurt) | Vegetarian; Milk\, Mustard\, Sulphites                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          \nJeera Rice (Cumin Spiced Rice) | Vegan; None           \n\nThis menu contains fish (cod) but is vegetarian-friendly (6/7 dishes are meat-free). SUMMARY:Iranian Cookery Class with Rose | Veg Friendly | Bristol
DESCRIPTION:Chef Rose will teach delicious\, authentic Iranian dishes followed by a sit-down meal.\n\n\nABOUT THE CUISINE \nIranian cuisine is renowned for its aromatic herbs\, delicate spices\, and beautiful balance of sweet and sour flavours. From rich stews like Fesenjan to vibrant yoghurt dishes and saffron-scented rice. Iranian food is deeply social\, with meals shared in warm\, communal gatherings\, a celebration of hospitality\, and connection. \n \nABOUT THE CHEF \nA message from Chef Rose: \n“My name is Rose\, and I moved to the UK two years ago. One of the things I have loved about coming here is meeting people from all over the world\, I believe food is a wonderful way to learn about eachother and discover new cultures\, traditions\, and stories. \nBefore moving to the UK\, I studied midwifery and later trained in surgery. I worked in a surgical department for 17 years. Although my career was in healthcare\, food has always played an important role in my life. \nMy mother was an excellent cook and was well known among family and friends for her delicious meals and desserts. She wanted me to focus on my education\, so she never really taught me how to cook. However\, growing up with her wonderful food taught me what good food should taste like and gave me a real appreciation for cooking. \nI only started cooking after I got married. In Iranian culture\, preparing food for the family is often an important part of home life. To my surprise\, I learned very quickly\, and before long people were complimenting my food and asking for my recipes. I believe I owe this to my mother. Nothing makes me happier than seeing people enjoy a meal that I have prepared. \nThrough my cooking\, I hope to share not only the flavours of Iran but also the warmth\, hospitality\, and traditions that are such an important part of Iranian culture.” \n \n \n\n\n\n \nON THE MENU (subject to change) \n\nMirza Ghasemi (Aubergine Dip) | Vegetarian; Egg\nAdas Polo (Sweet and Fragrant Lentil Rice) | Vegetarian; Milk\nAsh Reshteh (Noodle Soup) | Vegetarian; Milk\, Gluten (Wheat)\nBorani Esfenaj (Spinach Dip) | Vegetarian; Milk\, Tree Nuts (Walnuts)\nSambusa (Spiced Potato Filo Parcels) | Vegan; Gluten (Wheat)\nTas Kebab (Tangy Chicken with Quince and Plums) | Meat (Chicken); None\n\nThis menu contains meat (chicken) but is vegetarian-friendly\, with 5 of 6 dishes meat-free. I am from the lovely island nation of Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean and I am the mother of two daughters. My cooking journey started over 25 years ago when I was just 10. My mother had to go to work\, leaving me to cook for my two younger siblings. At first\, I made some pretty awful dishes but with my mother’s help and encouragement\, I got better. At her suggestion\, I started cooking school and soon I was creating new dishes on my own. I then trained at the Trinidad and Tobago International Hilton Hotel and worked as a sous chef at the Carlton Savannah Hotel when Queen E stayed there in 2009. When the hotel closed\, I first started cooking for homeless people and then for children with additional needs. I became a mother figure for many of the kids and some of the older people. I have been volunteering for Praxis charity for the last year\, a charity that helps support people on their immigration journey. \nIn addition to cooking\, I am passionate about music\, dancing and laughing! SUMMARY:Ecuadorian Cookery Class with Judith|Veg Friendly |LONDON| Pop up
DESCRIPTION:Chef Judith will teach you some of her favourite Ecuadorian dishes followed by a sit down meal.\n\n\nABOUT THE CUISINE \nEcuadorian cuisine comes from South America and reflects the country’s diverse geography\, from the Pacific coast to the Andes mountains and the Amazon rainforest. It combines fresh seafood\, tropical fruits\, vegetables\, grains\, and spices to create vibrant\, flavourful dishes. Meals are hands-on\, social\, and made to be shared\, with signature dishes like Ceviche\, Tigrillo\, and Empanadas highlighting the warmth\, creativity\, and communal spirit of Ecuadorian food culture. \n \nABOUT THE CHEF \nA message from our Chef Judith: \n“My name is Judith\, and I am from Ecuador\, a beautiful country in South America. I grew up in Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas\, an area located between the coast and the mountains\, so we had the best produce. I grew up in a big family where food and music were always part of our joy – we loved getting together\, sharing meals\, and dancing. In Ecuador\, you can find four seasons in one day by travelling from one part of the country to another\, and that means that you can experience many different types of food in the country. When I came to England\, I started to do some voluntary work in a ‘healthy living’ community group\, and I used to run a session on healthy eating – this is reflected in my menu today. Teaching others about Ecuadorian food helps me feel close to my country and reminds me that even far from home\, we can still celebrate who we are and connect with others through culture and food. Each dish I create carries the soul of my homeland that is inspired by the unique beauty of the Amazon\, where the jungle speaks and nature is sacred. My hands work with love\, honouring my roots and sharing a little piece of living nature with the world.” \n \n\n\n\n \nON THE MENU (subject to change): \n\nTwo Ceviche | Fish (Prawns) and Vegan; Celery\, Crustaceans\, Mustard\nTigrillo (Plantain Hash) | Vegetarian; Eggs\, Milk\, Peanuts\nEstofado de Carne y Chocolate (Beef Stew with Chocolate) | Meat (Beef); Celery\nEstofado de Vegetales (Golden Vegetable Stew) | Vegan; Celery\nEmpanadas de Viento (Cheese-Filled Pastries) | Vegetarian; Eggs\, Gluten (Wheat)\, Milk\nColada Morada (Warm Fruit Punch) | Vegan; None\n\nThis menu contains meat (beef) and fish (prawns) but is vegetarian-friendly (5/6 dishes are meat-free). I’m volunteering with local refugee charities Bristol Hospitality Network and Borderlands. When I got my refugee status last year I held a big picnic in the park for my friends to celebrate.
SUMMARY:Somali Cookery Class with Saada | Veg Friendly | Bristol
Somali food brings people together\, celebrating hospitality\, bold flavours and the joy of sharing home cooked meals. \n \nIn this cookery class in Bristol\, you’ll learn to make traditional Somali dishes while connecting with others and supporting refugees and migrants in the UK through food. \n \nABOUT THE CHEF \nA message from chef Saada: \n“Hi my name is Saada. SUMMARY:Saudi Arabian + Uyghur Cookery Class with Sana |Cookery School
DESCRIPTION:Chef Sana will teach delicious\, authentic Saudi Arabian and Uyghur dishes followed by a sit-down meal.\n\n\nABOUT THE CUISINE \nSaudi Arabian and Uyghur cuisine blends rich Middle Eastern spices with Central Asian traditions\, creating vibrant\, flavourful\, and comforting dishes. From hand-stretched noodles and dumplings to sweet sesame and date desserts\, the food is colourful\, social\, and made to be shared. Meals are deeply communal\, reflecting the warmth\, hospitality\, and culinary heritage of these cultures. \n \nABOUT THE CHEF \nA message from chef Sana: \n“Hi\, My name is Sana. I moved here from Jeddah\, Saudi Arabia in 2013. I have lived the majority of my life there. Culturally I am Uyghur\, an ethnic Muslim minority located in Central Asia (now part of China called Xinjiang). The dishes I teach in my class are a mix of the two cultures I come from. I learned to cook from my Mum. She used to call my sisters and me to assist her with cooking. I was her main helper\, especially when it came to pulling noodles. \nWhen I was in high school and had our summer holiday\, my mum trusted me enough to cook for the family and I insisted she write me the recipes with every little detail. I got paid for it! My mum taught me to cook several cuisines from around the world but my favourites were Saudi & Uyghur. Even though I have explored hundreds of dishes living in London\, Laghman is the most delicious dish (In my personal opinion!)” \n \n\n\n\nON THE MENU (subject to change): \n\nJawawa (Uyghur Dumplings filled with Lamb or Chard) | Meat (Lamb) and Vegetarian; Gluten (Wheat)\, Milk\, Sulphites\nCrunchy Chilli & Garlic Oil | Vegan; None\nLaghman (Hand-stretched Noodles with Braised Vegetables) | Vegetarian; Celery\, Eggs\, Gluten (Wheat)\, Sulphites\nFoul Qulabah (Fava Bean Dip) | Vegetarian; Gluten (Wheat)\, Milk\nLuqaimat Alqadi (Saudi Doughnuts with Sesame and Date Syrup) | Vegetarian; Gluten (Wheat)\, Milk\, Sesame\, Soya\n\nThis menu is mostly vegetarian but contains one dish with meat (lamb)\, with vegetarian filling options.
