I’m volunteering with local refugee charities Bristol Hospitality Network and Borderlands. When I got my refugee status last year I held a big picnic in the park for my friends to celebrate. Our city is nicknamed ‘Petit Paris’ because there is a strong French influence. I wasn’t allowed to cook growing up because my parents wanted me to focus on my studies. I was a teacher in Algeria but wasn’t able to continue teaching when I moved to the UK in 2015. After I met my wonderful husband\, we quickly had children and I began to spend more time at home. During this time\, I realised my passion for cooking and baking. I cooked so much for my friends and family that they told me to stop as they feared they were getting fat. In the future\, I want to open my own bakery where I can share Algerian food and culture with people in London. My mother had to go to work\, leaving me to cook for my two younger siblings. At first\, I made some pretty awful dishes but with my mother’s help and encouragement\, I got better. At her suggestion\, I started cooking school and soon I was creating new dishes on my own. I then trained at the Trinidad and Tobago International Hilton Hotel and worked as a sous chef at the Carlton Savannah Hotel when Queen E stayed there in 2009. When the hotel closed\, I first started cooking for homeless people and then for children with additional needs. I became a mother figure for many of the kids and some of the older people. I have been volunteering for Praxis charity for the last year\, a charity that helps support people on their immigration journey. \nIn addition to cooking\, I am passionate about music\, dancing and laughing! SUMMARY:Pakistani Cookery Class with Amtul | Veg Friendly | Bristol
DESCRIPTION:Chef Amtul will teach delicious\, authentic Pakistani dishes followed by a sit-down meal.\n\n\nABOUT THE CUISINE \n \nWith deep roots in regional traditions and home cooking passed down through generations\, Pakistani cuisine is known for its bold spices\, fresh herbs\, and slow-cooked stews. It combines rice\, breads\, and vegetables into comforting\, shared meals full of flavour and heart. From curries and lentils to fritters and salads\, it sits within South Asian cooking while keeping its own distinct identity. \n \nABOUT THE CHEF \nA message from Chef Amtul: \n““I come from Pakistan\, it is a beautiful country. I grew up in Rabwah\, on the lush green banks of the Chenab River in Punjab. The town was established for the Ahmadiyya community. \nI remember my childhood there very fondly\, they were the happiest days of my life and still bring me peace when I think about them. From the age of 10\, I helped my mother cook\, and by 12 I was cooking properly on my own. Okra masala and aubergine curry were among the first dishes I learned to make. My father always praised my cooking and gave me confidence\, while my mother would gently suggest ways to improve. \nAfter I married\, I moved to Bahawalpur with my husband\, who is a doctor\, and together we raised our four children. But because Ahmadis face persecution in Pakistan\, it became unsafe for us to stay there. We first moved to Senegal\, where my husband helped establish the Humanity First hospital\, and later to The Gambia so our children could study in English. In 2023\, we moved to the UK. \nPakistani culture is deeply rooted in hospitality and care for others\, it is very important to make guests feel welcomed and cared for. During my time in Senegal and Gambia\, I was always hosting people visiting the hospital from different countries. I always made sure they had delicious food to eat and extras to take with them. Cooking for people has always brought me joy. I only know how to cook in large quantities! My food is spicy\, balanced\, fresh\, comforting\, and full of flavour. I am excited to share my recipes with Migrateful and hope you enjoy them!” \n \n\n\n\n \nON THE MENU (subject to change) \n \n\nPalak Paneer (Traditional Cheese in Spinach Curry) | Vegetarian; Milk\nChicken Mughlai (Rich Chicken Curry) | Meat (Chicken); Milk\, Tree Nuts (Pistachio\, Almond\, Cashew)\nParatha Roti (Flaky Flatbread) | Vegetarian; Milk\, Gluten (Wheat)\nRaita and Green Chutney (Yoghurt Side Dishes) | Vegetarian; Milk\nBaingan Sabzi (Aubergine Curry) | Vegetarian; Milk\nPakora (Deep-Fried Vegetable Fritter) | Vegan; None\n\n \nThis menu contains meat (chicken) but is vegetarian-friendly\, with 5 of 6 dishes meat-free. SUMMARY:Ecuadorian Cookery Class with Judith |Veg Friendly| LONDON| Pop up
DESCRIPTION:Chef Judith will teach you some of her favourite Ecuadorian dishes followed by a sit down meal.\n\n\nABOUT THE CUISINE \nEcuadorian cuisine comes from South America and reflects the country’s diverse geography\, from the Pacific coast to the Andes mountains and the Amazon rainforest. It combines fresh seafood\, tropical fruits\, vegetables\, grains\, and spices to create vibrant\, flavourful dishes. Meals are hands-on\, social\, and made to be shared\, with signature dishes like Ceviche\, Tigrillo\, and Empanadas highlighting the warmth\, creativity\, and communal spirit of Ecuadorian food culture. \n \nABOUT THE CHEF \nA message from our Chef Judith: \n“My name is Judith\, and I am from Ecuador\, a beautiful country in South America. I grew up in Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas\, an area located between the coast and the mountains\, so we had the best produce. I grew up in a big family where food and music were always part of our joy – we loved getting together\, sharing meals\, and dancing. In Ecuador\, you can find four seasons in one day by travelling from one part of the country to another\, and that means that you can experience many different types of food in the country. When I came to England\, I started to do some voluntary work in a ‘healthy living’ community group\, and I used to run a session on healthy eating – this is reflected in my menu today. Teaching others about Ecuadorian food helps me feel close to my country and reminds me that even far from home\, we can still celebrate who we are and connect with others through culture and food. Each dish I create carries the soul of my homeland that is inspired by the unique beauty of the Amazon\, where the jungle speaks and nature is sacred. My hands work with love\, honouring my roots and sharing a little piece of living nature with the world.” \n \n\n\n\n \nON THE MENU (subject to change): \n\nTwo Ceviche | Fish (Prawns) and Vegan; Celery\, Crustaceans\, Mustard\nTigrillo (Plantain Hash) | Vegetarian; Eggs\, Milk\, Peanuts\nEstofado de Carne y Chocolate (Beef Stew with Chocolate) | Meat (Beef); Celery\nEstofado de Vegetales (Golden Vegetable Stew) | Vegan; Celery\nEmpanadas de Viento (Cheese-Filled Pastries) | Vegetarian; Eggs\, Gluten (Wheat)\, Milk\nColada Morada (Warm Fruit Punch) | Vegan; None\n\nThis menu contains meat (beef) and fish (prawns) but is vegetarian-friendly (5/6 dishes are meat-free). I can’t wait to share all of these wonderful ingredients with you in my class.  \n \nWhen I’m not in the kitchen\, you’ll find me on the football pitch or in my dance class. SUMMARY:Saudi Arabian + Uyghur Cookery Class with Sana |Cookery School
DESCRIPTION:Chef Sana will teach delicious\, authentic Saudi Arabian and Uyghur dishes followed by a sit-down meal.\n\n\nABOUT THE CUISINE \nSaudi Arabian and Uyghur cuisine blends rich Middle Eastern spices with Central Asian traditions\, creating vibrant\, flavourful\, and comforting dishes. From hand-stretched noodles and dumplings to sweet sesame and date desserts\, the food is colourful\, social\, and made to be shared. Meals are deeply communal\, reflecting the warmth\, hospitality\, and culinary heritage of these cultures. \n \nABOUT THE CHEF \nA message from chef Sana: \n“Hi\, My name is Sana. I moved here from Jeddah\, Saudi Arabia in 2013. I have lived the majority of my life there. Culturally I am Uyghur\, an ethnic Muslim minority located in Central Asia (now part of China called Xinjiang). The dishes I teach in my class are a mix of the two cultures I come from. I learned to cook from my Mum. She used to call my sisters and me to assist her with cooking. I was her main helper\, especially when it came to pulling noodles. \nWhen I was in high school and had our summer holiday\, my mum trusted me enough to cook for the family and I insisted she write me the recipes with every little detail. I got paid for it! My mum taught me to cook several cuisines from around the world but my favourites were Saudi & Uyghur. Even though I have explored hundreds of dishes living in London\, Laghman is the most delicious dish (In my personal opinion!)” \n \n\n\n\nON THE MENU (subject to change): \n\nJawawa (Uyghur Dumplings filled with Lamb or Chard) | Meat (Lamb) and Vegetarian; Gluten (Wheat)\, Milk\, Sulphites\nCrunchy Chilli & Garlic Oil | Vegan; None\nLaghman (Hand-stretched Noodles with Braised Vegetables) | Vegetarian; Celery\, Eggs\, Gluten (Wheat)\, Sulphites\nFoul Qulabah (Fava Bean Dip) | Vegetarian; Gluten (Wheat)\, Milk\nLuqaimat Alqadi (Saudi Doughnuts with Sesame and Date Syrup) | Vegetarian; Gluten (Wheat)\, Milk\, Sesame\, Soya\n\nThis menu is mostly vegetarian but contains one dish with meat (lamb)\, with vegetarian filling options.
