About This Event

In this TRAINING CLASS Saada will teach delicious, authentic Somali dishes followed by a sit-down meal.

Our talented new cohort of Migrateful chefs are wrapping up their initial training and getting ready to hold their first cookery classes to the public.

This training class will be led by Chef Saada from Somalia at the Migrateful Cookery School at Windmill Hill City Farm, Bedminster, BS2 9UR

Please note, during these training classes, we will be testing the dishes, and how the class runs. Think of it like a technical rehearsal at the theatre. This means it may run for longer than a normal class and involve some stop/starting. Our Chef Development team will also be present to guide and observe, along with volunteers who will help support the chef, and we will ask for your feedback at the end of the class.

A sample menu of the dishes that will be taught includes:

  • Hanid (Lamb Stew with Tamarind Gravy) | Meat (Lamb); Celery
  • Soor Iyo Cagaar Maraq (Vegetable Stew Served on Cornmeal) | Vegetarian; Celery
  • Bajiyo (Falafel) | Vegan; None
  • Sambusa | Vegan; Gluten (Wheat)
  • Bariis Iskukaris (Rainbow Rice) | Vegetarian; None
  • Shigni (Chilli, Date and Mango Sauce) | Vegan; None
  • Coconut Sauce | Vegetarian; Milk

This menu contains meat (chicken) but is vegetarian friendly (6/7 dishes are meat-free). Kindly note that we will not be substituting any ingredients to accommodate dietary needs, so please only book into classes that suit your dietary requirements. Please be aware that while all allergens listed above have been identified as being in this menu, traces of all 14 allergens will be present in this training class.

Please see our Food and Allergen Policy when booking into the class for more information.

Throughout the class, Chef Saada will share stories about her food and culture. You’ll work together with other participants to prepare each of the dishes, before sitting down to share a meal together.

A message from Chef Saada:

“Hi my name is Saada. I grew up in Somalia, East Africa, with my mum and dad and three siblings – I’m the second oldest. I learned to cook with my Mum. She had her own recipes and her own way of cooking. I stayed at her side while she cooked – she needed my help and I was so interested. I would stand with her for six hours at a time. I stayed at school until I was 9 years old and then I stopped. But I wanted to carry on learning so I kept reading and teaching myself.

Gradually I started cooking more, by the age of 12 I was cooking for the family.

I came to the UK in 2004, first to Weston Super Mare then to Bristol. I met and married my husband that same year and had my first baby in 2005. Now I have four children! As well as cooking for my family, I cook at lunch clubs and organise celebrations and events for older people, for women, in schools and for young people. Always bringing people together through food.

I like teaching – seeing people concentrate. When you cook, you use different muscles and hold yourself differently, it brings out the best in people. The way I make samosas is second nature to me. I’ve learned my techniques over a lifetime, and I am very happy to share them with you! “

We’re excited to have you in the class! Please take note of a few final reminders:
