About This Event

In this session Manal will teach delicious, authentic Syrian dishes followed by a sit-down, family-style meal.

ABOUT THE CUISINE

Syrian food is made for sharing. Meals often begin with mezze, a spread of small plates featuring pickled vegetables, salads, breads, dips, and pastries – many of which are meat-free. While traditionally served before a main course, mezze can just as easily stand on its own as a meal. When embarking on an exploration of Syrian cuisine, expect an eating experience rooted in hospitality, connection, fresh flavours and a diverse range of dishes.

ABOUT THE CHEF

“My name is Manal, I am from Damascus, the capital of Syria. I studied chemistry in University, as well as other courses like body language, first aid and computing. After raising three children, I decided to open my own shop, selling my designs of handmade hats, bags and accessories.

I moved to the UK in 2024, and started a new chapter in my life with gratitude and excitement. I am very grateful to the UK because here, I can sleep feeling safe and warm with my children and my kind husband.

Cooking has been a part of my life since childhood. I grew up in a big family where food was not just about eating, it was about love, family gatherings and warm memories together. My lovely mother always encouraged my passion for cooking and even bought me my own little apron because I loved standing beside her in the kitchen and learning how to cook from her.

Today, I enjoy sharing the flavours, colours, and warmth of Syrian food with others through dishes made with love, creativity and tradition.”

THE CLASS FORMAT

Our cookery classes are family-style – meaning everyone works together to prepare the dishes as a team.

While you’ll be asked to choose one dish to focus on, you’ll have the opportunity to move around the kitchen, help with other dishes, and learn from each recipe. It’s a fun, social, and collaborative way to cook! At the end of the class, you’ll sit down with the chef, class facilitator and volunteers to enjoy the delicious meal you’ve created together.
